"Lisa"
Lisa is 20 years old. At the age of 14, her boyfriend made
her have sex with his father for $100. She fled her drug
addicted home at age 15 with a man who promised to take care
of her. The man turned out to be a pimp who forced her into
prostitution. At age 20, she was arrested for intent to
solicit prostitution and spent the night in jail. The next
day she was released and forced back on the streets; that
very next night, she was arrested again. Knowing that if she
didn't flee, she was in danger of long-term jail time, she
fled from her pimp and located a women's shelter. They
referred her to HomeBase Youth Services where she began the
slow process of putting her life back together.
One day an old friend called and invited her for lunch.
Upon meeting her friend she realized that she'd been set-up,
and her pimp was waiting for her. He took her at gunpoint to
Los Angeles where she was locked in a bathroom for eight days
and beaten regularly. She finally convinced him she would go
back into prostitution. The pimp released her to go to work
and she fled when she hit the streets. Lisa called HomeBase
Youth Services collect. The case manager she spoke with had
the Los Angeles police pick her up and take her to the bus
station. HomeBase staff had a bus ticket waiting for her to return to
Phoenix and HomeBase.
With continued personal effort and intervention, Lisa has become
self-sufficient and while she continues to work on her issues resulting
from years of abuse, she is living independent and is prostitution
free. Several months ago she called a staff member at the HomeBase Transitional
Living Facility and happily reported that she met a man she liked a lot.
She had been on five dates with him and was proud to report that she had
not had sex with him. She has learned to value herself.
